Mission Knives makes a highly specialized line of tactical and dive knives. Although steel versions of most of their blades are available, we were drawn to their unique titanium alloy products which are touted as being used by the Navy Seals, US marines, NATO, various dive teams as well as both amateur and professional underwater enthusiasts.
Mission’s proprietary titanium alloy has several coveted properties. First and foremost the knives weigh nearly 50% less than their steel counterparts and are 100% corrosion resistant. Lending to their military appeal are the knives’ increased durability and nonmagnetic properties allowing their use in minefields or IED scenarios where magnetic triggers are known to exist. So confident is the company in their products that the knives are backed by a lifetime warranty.
The MPU-7 Ti is one of their smallest fixed blade knives, described as the kid brother to a more mature and larger MPS. As with nearly all Mission knives, the MPU comes with a skeletonized handle, a choice of partially serrated or fine edge and is fully titanium. The knife can be ordered with the skeletonized handle as is, with cord wrap or even added G-10 handles. The MPU’s kydex sheath is made by Blade-Tech. It can attach to a belt or strap or simply hang as a neck knife if desired. Mission notes the MPS makes a good tactical boot knife as well.

We talked with Anthony, the owner of Mission, about the HRC (Rockwell Scale) of his knives. Knife lovers gravitate to high HRC scores because we are obsessed with finding the hardest, toughest, most durable blade and believe the best measure of those things is the HRC scale. As Anthony points out, just because the knife is hard doesn’t mean it is durable or tough.
Once a knife’s HRC score moves above the 56-57 range the steel loses ductility and becomes brittle, fracturing more easily with dynamic forces, a problem that is compounded by any flaws in the blade. This is not a desirable feature for a working knife.
Although a high HRC does mean more tensile strength and the ability to hold an edge well, an equally important and oft overlooked characteristic is the knife’s abrasive wear resistance or abrasion resistance. This can dramatically affect a blade’s edge retention. Anthony notes the abrasion resistance of Mission’s titanium blades is 2-3 times that of steel blades lending to an extremely durable edge. This increased abrasion resistance allows Mission to harden the titanium alloy to a low enough HRC that the blade takes rugged abuse that would chip or break steel knives with a higher HRC.
We lightly sharpened ours out of the box. The MPU performed great. We gouged our way through a 1×4″ and sliced everything in our path with it. As advertised, it is super lightweight – something you have to feel to appreciate. Like all Mission knives it is aggressively styled and we think looks particularly attractive in the serrated version.
Overall, the MPU-7 Ti is a fantastic, well styled neck and boot knife. Mission claims some unmatched features for their titanium alloy. They stand behind their work with a lifetime warranty and free re-sharpening program. For the law enforcement, military or underwater professional, handling these knives is a must.
